April 15 & 18, 2014 - My Students Share their Cadaver Experience

My Students Visit a Cadaver

Gabrielle Bonheur

Going to see a cadaver and visit the brain museum was a real eye-opener for me. It was a great experience, especially for those continuing into a medical program. Dissecting a cat and diagram's in a book do not compare to the real thing. The smell was overwhelming at first, but I adjusted to it rather quickly. At the brain museum I was fascinated with how well it was put together, and the cleanliness of the brains. I also looked at 'Gray's Anatomy' book printed in 1942, the medical terminology was interesting to me. To see how different it was 70 years ago was interesting to me. This trip was a great experience, and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest.

The class trip to the Buffalo Medical School anatomy lab was very beneficial and informative. The staff at the school were very friendly and interested in how they could help us better understand the anatomy of the human body. They were more then willing to answer any questions and also quizzed us to see how knowledgeable we were (we showed 'em!) Aside from the cadavers they also showed us several different organs, its crazy how much larger a heart from someone who died of congestive heart failure is compared to a normal heart. Another thing that stood out was they showed us lungs of a smoker, no pictures you can find can compare to seeing these things in person!

I had a great experience at the cadaver at the University of Buffalo. It was very interesting to be able to see the inside of the body in a person and not from looking in a book or dissecting a cat to try to understand it. I am very happy I was able to go and feel I gained a lot from it. it was very amazing to see and hold the internal organs of the body. I also found the brain museum amazing and being able to see all the parts an different cuts of real human brains. It was an experience I will never forget and something I am glad I was able to be apart of.

I had a great time at the University of Buffalo. The cadaver's were very fascinating. Although I didn't feel comfortable touching/digging through them, it did help with solidifying the information we'd been learning all semester. Being a psychology major, I especially enjoyed seeing the brains in the neurobiology lab. It made me feel that I was getting an extra benefit that some students may have unfortunately missed out on. I fully encourage future students to go on the trip as well.

I had a rewarding experience at the University of Buffalo's Medical Science building. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the professors who work in the gross anatomy lab. They were very helpful in asking any questions we had about the cadaver's anatomy and how they end up in the lab after their death. We were free to touch and hold the organs of the cadaver which was strange at first but we eventually became very intrigued with it. It was exciting to see the organs of a human body in person because it gave us a different perspective than a text book. It was amazing to hold the human heart and compare the lungs of a healthy individual to that of an individual with a "smokers lung". After we left the gross anatomy lab, we toured the brain museum which had a collection of 80 brains shown from different angles. It was interesting to see specimens with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral aneurysms. After we left the school, we took a trip to Moe's and had a good time.
