Welcome Life Long Learners! I am delighted that you are participating in my course. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and being part of this adventure with you. This course explores the rich extensive history of the Czech lands that dates over a thousand years. We will look at major events that molded the Czech lands into modern day Czech Republic. Emphasis will be placed on its relation to the Holy Roman Empire, Karl (Charles)IV, the Protestant Bohemian Revolt among other transformational instances. Our exploration will be guided by historical content along with literature that reflects the ideas and cultural norms of the times. This course will be great taken along with the Introduction to Austrian Literature and Civilization, as the two countries share an inextricable history together.

Course Outline

Welcome to Introduction to Czech Literature and Civilization.

The meeting times for this course will be Wednesdays from 7:40pm—8:40pm from August 7, — 25, 2023. All meetings will be held via zoom. Study questions will be provided prior to each meeting. All reading material will be made available to you via this webpage. Here is a breakdown of what our schedule will be:

Week

1. Introduction. We will begin by identifying and mapping the Czech lands as early as 1002. We will then proceed to its recognition as an imperial state in 1198.


2. This week we go deep into history and look at Karl (Charles) IV, the Protestant Bohemian Protestant Revolt, the Habsburgs. We will also have an introduction into stories that tell of the origins of the Czech lands and a look at important literary authors of the Czech Republic.


3. Closing. We conclude our introduction into Czech Literature and Civilization, with a brief look at Czech Republic's role in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, WWI, WWII, and the Velvet Revolution. We will also look at important authors and artists of those times.
